• War in Ukraine Locked up at home or huddled in shelters: this is how Kievites wait for war on their streets

Russian and Ukrainian forces

have

clashed with artillery overnight from Friday to Saturday on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital.

From the center of the city, where the curfew

prevails

, loud and frequent

artillery fire

could be heard and seen before dawn.

The Ukrainian Army reported fighting in the Kiev neighborhood of

Beresteiska

, just seven kilometers from the historic center, where the headquarters of the main democratic institutions of this country are located.

Authorities have urged citizens to help defend the city from

advancing Russian forces

in what is Europe's worst security crisis in decades.

As the fighting intensifies, the governments of

Russia

and

Ukraine

have signaled that they are open to negotiations.

It is the first glimmer of hope for diplomacy since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion on Thursday to "de-Nazify"

Ukraine

.

But

Russia

did not loosen the pressure and continued to attack its neighboring country.

"The fate of

Ukraine

is being decided right now," Ukrainian President

Volodimir Zelensky

had said late Friday night in a video message addressed to his fellow citizens.

"Tonight they will launch an assault. All of us must understand what awaits us. We must resist tonight."

Moscow

said on Friday it had succeeded in capturing the

Gostomel

airfield northwest of the capital - a key foothold for an assault on Kiev - which has been contested since Russian paratroopers landed there in the early stages of this war.

The Ukrainian air force

command

reported heavy fighting near the Vasylkiv air base, southwest of the capital, attacked by Russian paratroopers.

He also said that one of his fighters had shot down a Russian transport plane, although that could not be verified.

It would be a Russian Il-76 transport plane 20 km from

Kiev

, with more than 100 paratroopers on board.

"The sun has risen in

Kiev

. The shooting in my neighborhood has stopped. I can hear birds. It's like the end of a vampire movie," Ukrainian diplomat

Olexander Shcherba

tweeted at dawn : "Something tells me that tonight was important. And the enemy will also remember this night."

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has asked residents of Kiev to make Molotov cocktails to repel invaders.

Zelensk

and took to the streets to mobilize citizens and show that he has not fled.

Meanwhile, Russian President

Vladimir Putin

urged the Ukrainian Army to overthrow his government.

The country is being attacked from different fronts.

In some areas fuel, cash and medical supplies are running low.

Some families have fled to safety in shelters after Kiev began to come under Russian missile attacks on Thursday night.

Others have decided to leave.

The conflict could displace up to

five million people abroad

, several UN agencies calculate.
