While Kiev, emptied of part of its inhabitants, is still under Russian bombs, the first human tolls of the war in Ukraine are falling.

This Saturday morning, the Ukrainian Minister of Health, Viktor Liachko, announced that at least 198 Ukrainian civilians, including three children, were killed by the "invader", and 1,115 people injured.

Dozens of soldiers also lost their lives, while Russia does not give any information on its toll.

Kiev claims to inflict heavy losses on the Russian army.

At the same time, while men aged 18 to 60 are banned from leaving the territory due to the general mobilization, many Ukrainians have been fleeing the country for several days.

One hundred thousand Ukrainians have crossed the Polish border since the Russian attack which began on Thursday, announced Polish Deputy Interior Minister Pawel Szefernaker.

100,000 refugees in Poland

According to him, 90% of these refugees have somewhere to go in Poland, with friends or relatives, while the others benefit from the assistance of nine reception centers set up near the border.

They are offered meals, medical assistance if needed, a place to rest and information on what to do.

Polish border guard chief Tomasz Praga said at the same press conference that Friday alone saw nearly 50,000 Ukrainians arrive in Poland.

In Germany too, the first refugees arrive.

“Today we had 75 Ukrainians.

It's not a lot, but we expect a lot more in the coming days,” said Sascha Langenbach, spokesperson for the German capital's migrant management body.

"Their amazement at what is happening at home is almost palpable," he testifies.

Germany, Romania and Hungary are also preparing

In the reception center in North Berlin, officials have set up 1,300 beds and this number is expected to double in the coming days.

The workforce has also been reinforced with Ukrainian or Russian speaking staff.

Neighboring Romania is also anticipating a large influx, a "collateral effect" of the invasion of Ukraine, in the words of Defense Minister Vasile Dancu.

Thursday, the Border Police noted an increase in the number of arrivals, identifying some 5,300 people, against 2,400 the day before.

Several hundred, including women accompanied by children, crossed the border post of Sighetul Marmatiei (north), according to images broadcast by television.

“At least 400 or 500 people” also crossed the Hungarian border on foot on Thursday, according to the MTI news agency.
