Hearing loud explosions in Kiev... and Russian forces infiltrated the Ukrainian capital

Powerful explosions were heard early Friday in the center of Kiev, according to an AFP correspondent, a day after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The ground forces of the Ukrainian army indicated on their Facebook account that there was a "rocket launch" targeting Kiev, stressing that they destroyed two of these missiles while they were in flight.

She posted a short video clip showing a burning apartment building.

Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko said three people were wounded, one of them in a critical condition, when missile debris fell in a residential area in the southeast of the capital.

Klitschko posted a photo showing two firefighters working hard in front of a smoky, badly damaged building.

Ukraine's Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko said on his Telegram account that "the strikes against Kiev with cruise or ballistic missiles have resumed. I heard two loud explosions."

The advance of Russian forces raises fears of an escalation of attacks targeting the capital, Kiev, and strategic and government facilities.

And on Thursday night, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russian forces had infiltrated Kiev.

"We have received information about the entry of enemy sabotage groups into Kiev," he added in a video message posted on the Ukrainian presidential account, urging residents to be vigilant and to abide by the curfew.

On Thursday, the Ukrainian army announced the continuation of fighting to control the Gostomel military airport near Kiev.

The Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Valery Zaloghny, announced that "the battles are taking place over the control of Gostomel airport," located a few kilometers northwest of Kiev.

The Antonov military airport in Gostomel was attacked by Russian forces, who arrived on board several helicopters and confronted units of the Ukrainian army.
