It was almost four years ago.

On the night of March 2 to 3, 2018, a 26-year-old man was struck by rifle fire near the El Cubanacan bar in Rennes.

Since then, the Latino bar in the Anatole France district has closed, weighed down by the impact of this affair.

The alleged perpetrator of the fatal shooting had admitted the facts in police custody.

This 33-year-old Guyanese had been arrested the day after the facts at the home of his ex-companion, before being placed in pre-trial detention.

This Friday, he will leave the prison cell where he has been imprisoned for four years to be tried by the Assize Court of Ille-et-Vilaine for three days.

The victim's family is waiting for answers, in order to better understand what happened that night.

A futile reason

As of Friday, Rodrigue Prince will be tried for "repeated murder".

Over the course of the investigation, the magistrates had accepted the thesis of the assassination, which refers to a murder perpetrated with premeditation, which the respondent disputes.

At the origin of the drama, witnesses evoke an altercation that took place in the El Cubanacan bar.

The accused had simply reported "mockery" to which he had been subjected.

Barely out of the night establishment, the respondent walked to his car where he grabbed a hunting rifle, before shooting the victim in the back.

Stéphane Phobère had collapsed.

The autopsy was final: death resulted from a “wound in the back caused by a projectile from a firearm”.

“He wanted to shoot him in the legs”

The defense of the defendant will try to make the voice of his client heard, already known to justice for acts of drug trafficking.

The latter assures that he did not want to kill the victim.

“Some witnesses say the victim tripped on the sidewalk while fleeing.

He assures that he wanted to shoot him in the legs”, justified his lawyer Me Jean-Guillaume Le Mintier at the time of the reconstruction of the facts.

The accused had explained that he himself had been the victim of shots a few days before the evening in the Latin bar.

The three-day trial may shed light on this precedent.
