• In the Rennes metropolitan area, three level crossings are considered dangerous.

  • Work has been underway since the end of 2019 to remove the level crossing on Boulevard Marbeuf in Rennes.

  • The suppression of those of Saint-Grégoire and Betton is on the other hand always under study.

“Be wise on the way.

Every year, SNCF Réseau organizes a national road safety day at level crossings to raise awareness among road users.

Unfortunately, these calls for caution do not prevent accidents.

In 2020, 83 collisions thus occurred at a level crossing in France with a balance sheet of 15 killed and six seriously injured.

If the responsibility of the drivers is engaged in 98% of the accidents, according to the SNCF, the dangerousness of certain level crossings is however pointed out.

The latest count from the Ministry of Transport lists 147, all registered in the national program to secure level crossings.

In Rennes, that of boulevard Marbeuf, the PN193, is no longer part of it.

At the end of 2019, work was indeed undertaken to remove this level crossing where three accidents, including one fatal, occurred between 2004 and 2013. The work is progressing with the development of an underpass, a funnel in technical jargon, to allow motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to pass under the railway line.

“Delivery is scheduled for 2024”, indicates Christophe Huau, director of Brittany and Pays-de-la-Loire of SNCF Réseau, which is partly financing this 27 million euro project.

The file is dragging on in Saint-Grégoire and Betton

In Saint-Grégoire, the PN4 at Maison Blanche is still part of the list of level crossings deemed dangerous.

“Its deletion is still under study”, underlines Christophe Huau, specifying that each file takes time.

“And we now favor securing work rather than deletion,” he adds.

That of PN4, where five people have lost their lives since 1977, is however recorded.

But it won't be right away.

During November, a public meeting was thus held in the town with the presentation of the two scenarios envisaged for the construction of a hopper, according to

Ouest-France

.

A new version of the preliminary project must be presented to the inhabitants in April before the start of the work, which will not take place before the end of 2023.

In the neighboring town of Betton, the removal of level crossing No. 7 is also under study.

But the file is dragging on since it already dates back to 2014. Two scenarios allowing the passage under the railway line have been imagined by the services of the municipality and Rennes metropolis.

They will be presented this Thursday evening to the inhabitants before the choice of the final project scheduled for the end of March.
