- Sörmland is absolutely the worst affected in all of Sweden, says Mattias Engman, forest consultant for the Sörmland / Örebro district at the Swedish Forest Agency.

According to Mattias Engman, this is due to the fact that it was extra dry and that eastern Sweden received very little precipitation in 2018, which led to the large eruption.

- Since there has been a lot of spruce forest, very old spruce forest.

More mixed forest

One of the methods to combat the spruce bark beetle is to cut down the forest.

In Janstorpsskogen in Nyköping, among other places, spruces have been felled due to infestation.

To prevent more infestations, no new spruces will be planted, but you choose to both release and plant more deciduous trees and pines.

Something that will be done in more places in the municipality.

The deciduous tree that will dominate is birch.

- But aspen, oak, rowan and other deciduous trees will probably also be present, says David Lundevall, land manager at Nyköping municipality.

In a smaller part of Janstorpsskogen, oak, beech and bird berries will be planted.
