• Directo Casado - Ayuso, PP crisis, last minute

  • Analysis The end of the leader who wanted to be alone and why it is the most dramatic exit in history, by Lucía Méndez

"A value of the first level", "the indisputable reference", "the dean of the presidents".

With these words from the PP they gave an early welcome yesterday to Alberto Núñez Feijóo as the future new leader of the party.

In the ranks of the first force of the opposition there is no doubt that they await him with open arms, ready to follow the course he marks and that many already predict differently.

And in that expectation they coincide with the

Government

.

In

Moncloa they

claim to want a new relationship with the

popular ones

.

They say they are willing to "reach out" but they also hope that the "new PP" will take the first step.

Feijóo generates "respect" and a point of fear.

They see in the president of the

Xunta

a leader capable of maintaining his positions in the face of the mantra of «denialism», a leader who can unite the entire party seamlessly and, as one prominent member of the PSOE recognizes, «put a brake on the expansionism of Vox, as it has done in

Galicia

»without the need to enlist in the cordon sanitaire theory, and even attract less radical socialist voters who are more dissatisfied with Pedro Sánchez's policy of alliances.

In the Executive, the unsavory voices are currently limited to the sphere of United We Can, the minority partner.

The socialist ministers and the Prime Minister now expect "a change of attitude" from the rival party.

«That they are not against everything;

that propose constructive alternatives, that are willing to talk about useful politics and a project for the country”, in the words of the Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños.

For the member with the greatest political weight in Sánchez's Cabinet, it is essential that the PP, with its new leader at the helm, clearly draw an "autonomous project on the margins of the far right."

Bolaños claims to appreciate in the

popular

"a certain purpose of amendment."

This was stated yesterday from the rostrum of

Congress

in his face to face with the PP deputy

Carlos Rojas

, but neither he nor Sánchez trusts.

They are aware that Feijóo, a man with a reputation for being moderate, far from the most ultramontane theses, is, in the words of a Galician socialist deputy, a politician "hard to crack" and "with more shells than Casado."

To him, he adds, "he cannot be condemned to ostracism", as was done for months with Pablo Casado.

There is no shortage of people in the PSOE who even believe that, due to its regional sensitivity and experience, it will be able to join forces, not only with the smaller regionalist formations, but also with the PNV at critical moments, thus robbing the Government of the favor of a partner whom he considers preferred.

And even destabilize Sánchez's approaches by closing ranks with territorial barons of different political signs on key issues such as the future design of regional financing or the distribution and execution of European funds.

While waiting for the new leadership and the party's revised project to be confirmed, the Executive believes that the first test to measure the degree of understanding will be the willingness to negotiate the release of the General Council of the Judiciary.

For the Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, this will will serve to gauge "the change in attitude."

It will be the demonstration, she says, that the

popular

intend to make "an opposition of the State and not against the State."

For her part, the first vice president, Nadia Calviño, aspires to find in Feijóo "a more constructive tone" and an actor capable of "improving the climate of coexistence."

They do not expect complacency in their environment with the distribution of European funds but they hope at least that the discrepancies are resolved by negotiating and discussing at home and not with accusations in

Brussels

.

In general, the socialist ministers believe that Núñez Feijóo "understands the plurality of

Spain

better ", as Bolaños affirms, and they believe that this can translate into a less belligerent position, for example, on linguistic issues.

Much less hope is placed in relation to the Catalan challenge, a terrain in which Feijóo, while maintaining the traditional firmness of the PP, can well match his speech to that of socialist barons such as Emiliano García Page or Javier Lambán.

Now, both the PSOE and Moncloa await the formation of the team that will accompany the new leader of the PP.

They are mainly attentive to the nucleus of collaborators that he organizes in Congress and, above all, who he will choose as spokesman for the parliamentary group because that person will be his voice to publicly confront the President of the Government.

And, meanwhile, imminently, all eyes turn to

La Palma

where, tomorrow, Sánchez and Feijóo will coincide with the rest of the regional leaders -also Isabel Díaz Ayuso from Madrid- in a new edition of the

Conference of Presidents

.

The Moncloa

sherpas

will scrutinize every gesture and every word to adjust to the political scenario that will open with the new leader of the PP.
