It is, however, an ally of Moscow.

The Belarusian president said on Thursday that his army was not participating in the invasion of Ukraine launched by Russia, while, according to Kiev, Russia is using Belarusian territory for its invasion.

"Our troops are not taking any part in this operation," Alexander Lukashenko said during a meeting with the heads of his army.

For Kyiv, Moscow uses Belarusian territory

According to Kiev, Russian forces are using Belarusian territory, where a contingent had been stationed for weeks for maneuvers, in their attack on Ukraine.

According to Lukashenko, the Russian president who called him on the phone "gave him a very detailed briefing on the situation" and told him that the purpose of the invasion was "to put an end to the genocide of the population in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions”.

These two pro-Russian separatist territories in eastern Ukraine have been waging a war with Ukrainian forces since 2014 and Vladimir Putin recognized their independence on Monday.

The Russian president has been repeating unfounded accusations of genocide for several days.
