While the war has just been declared in Ukraine, that in Syria does not end there.

After eleven years of conflict, at least 14.6 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in the country, according to a new United Nations report released on Wednesday evening.

A record according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha), which identified some 13.4 million in 2020.

Syria is in the grip of an economic crisis aggravated by Western sanctions, the Covid-19 pandemic and a brutal devaluation of the local currency.

More than three quarters of households (76%) are unable to cover their basic needs, an increase of 10% compared to 2020, indicates Ocha.

Syria's internally displaced population represents 37% of those in need of humanitarian assistance, the report said.

People who were never displaced, or who returned to their areas of origin before January 2021, are also finding it increasingly difficult to meet their basic needs, adds the office, which sees this as an "indicator of the aggravation of the crisis.
