China refuses to condemn Russia's attack on Ukraine, blames America

China refused to condemn Russia's attack on Ukraine, urging "all sides" instead to exercise restraint, reiterating the blame for the United States for "exaggerating" the possibility of war in Eastern Europe in recent days.

"The issue of Ukraine is complex in terms of its historical background... What we are witnessing today is a product of the interaction of complex factors," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a daily press briefing Thursday.

Chuning accused the United States and European countries of fueling the conflict through the supply of weapons.

Recalling previous US military operations, the spokeswoman said, "Weapons can never solve all problems. So, I don't think this is the time for anyone to pour oil on the fire. Instead, we should give peace a chance." .

"You describe the Russian behavior as an invasion, but I wonder, when the United States took unilateral military action against Afghanistan and other countries, what words did they use then? Were those invasions or something else?"

She said of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine: "We still hope that the parties concerned will not close the door to peace, and enter into dialogue and consultation instead."

On the other hand, the "Bloomberg" news agency reported that the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, during the tense press conference, repeatedly avoided questions about whether Beijing considered Moscow's military incursion into Ukrainian territory an "invasion."

"The parties directly concerned must exercise restraint and prevent the situation from spiraling out of control," the spokeswoman added, stressing that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be protected.
