] Russian forces have captured the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in northern Ukraine, according to Podolyak, adviser to the Ukrainian presidential office.

"It is difficult to say that the nuclear power plant is safe due to the complete indiscriminate attack of the Russian military," Podolyak said.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Zelensky had claimed that Russian forces were attempting to occupy the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which has been completely shut down since 2000, is located 16 km south of the border with Belarus and about 100 km north of the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which exploded in 1986, has a 30km radius and access to the public is still restricted.

President Zelensky has asked Congress to issue a national mobilization order to counter the Russian invasion.

President Zelensky even said he would "distribute weapons to all people who want to defend the sovereignty of the country."

The National Mobilization Ordinance refers to measures to convert military power and national infrastructure into a wartime system and to mobilize human resources and materials.

Anti-war protests took place in major Russian cities, including the capital Moscow and the two cities, St. Petersburg.

Russian police arrested 1,400 demonstrators after many citizens took part in anti-war protests, Russian media reported.
