Good evening,

After the most recent spring storms, the forestry offices in the federal states are beginning to assess the damage.

Hessen Forst also did this and published it on Wednesday: around 100,000 trees fell over in the strong winds in the state forest.

What is heard from the Hochtaunus sounds more gratifying, there the dispute over the so-called Philosophenweg seems to have been settled.

There are signs of consensus in the Hessian CDU on the question of who should succeed Prime Minister Volker Bouffier, and there are signs of stress at the Frankfurt district court.

The evening overview.

Claims: Thousands have lost money as a result of the Wirecard insolvency and want compensation.

They assert their claim before the Frankfurt Regional Court.

That causes problems.

Within a day, the court received 100 lawsuits from Wirecard investors against the financial regulator Bafin, and another 500 have been announced.

And it probably won't stay that way.

In November, Court President Wilhelm Wolf said that the court was initially expecting 1,500 lawsuits, and the legal protection insurers would give cost commitments for a further 20,000.

The plaintiffs are demanding damages from the financial supervisory authority: they argue that the Bafin did not control Wirecard sufficiently, did not take indications of violations of the law seriously enough and thus did not prevent the manipulation.

And further: you have not informed the public,

The background: The once listed financial service provider and payment processor Wirecard collapsed in 2020 after admitting bogus bookings in the billions.

The investors suffered losses as a result of the insolvency and demanded compensation of between 3,000 and 60,000 euros from the Bafin.

Anna-Sophia Lang reports on the complaints and their possible treatment.

Passage: The Philosophenweg through the Opel Zoo in Kronberg is no longer a public path.

The walking path had been used by many to view some of the animals free of charge, but there had been a long-standing dispute about this.

In the 1950s, the founder of the zoo, Georg von Opel, issued the slogan for the private enclosure: "Free entry for free animals". Twenty years later, the dispute began over the question of whether cash registers should be on the Philosophenweg.

The suggestions back then: season tickets and a key for Kronberger and Königsteiner.

A similar rule is now in effect.

Bernhard Biener recapitulates the story of a dispute that was not just about money and comments on the compromise that has now been found.

Succession: His predecessor had it easier.

When Roland Koch told the CDU and the public twelve years ago who should succeed him as Prime Minister of Hesse, nobody was surprised that he named Volker Bouffier.

Why?

Because he and Koch had won power in Hesse years earlier and, according to the balance of power within the party, could have claimed the state chancellery as early as 1999.

But because he let the younger cook take precedence, he had a moral obligation, so to speak, to later assert him as his successor.

That writes Ewald Hetrodt, state parliament correspondent for the Rhein-Main-Zeitung of the FAZ in Wiesbaden.
