Dutch police said Tuesday evening that they arrested a gunman after he held hostages for several hours in the "Apple Store" in one of the main squares of the capital Amsterdam, noting that the hostages were not harmed.

The police said - in a tweet on Twitter - "We succeeded in arresting the hostage-taker by running him over with a car as he was running" from the store, warning of "violent scenes" that spread on social media of the gunman being hit.

She explained that after being hit by a police car, a robot searched the man who was lying on the ground to make sure he was free of explosives, and the police continued in her tweet, "We now know that the suspect was not carrying explosives on his body and the medical team is taking care of him now."

Police said they are currently unable to reveal the identity of the suspect.

This raised a state of anxiety among the residents of the area, and the police initially announced via Twitter that "there is a hostage-taking operation in the "Apple Store" in Leidseplein, which is witnessing a large movement in Amsterdam, noting that its forces are surrounding the place.

Footage - shown on social media - showed an armed man holding an unarmed one, and media reports said that several witnesses heard gunfire inside the Apple Store.

The security forces deployed in the place with several specialized units to "control the situation", according to the police, who received a report of an armed robbery, and the theft turned into hostage-taking.
