CSU General Secretary Markus Blume is moving to the Bavarian cabinet and becoming the new Science Minister.

He replaces the previous Minister Bernd Sibler.

The former State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Stephan Mayer, is appointed as his successor as Secretary General.

The previous Deggendorf district administrator Christian Bernreiter (CSU) is to become the new construction and transport minister.

Former Environment Minister Ulrike Scharf will become the new Family Minister.

This was announced by Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) on Wednesday after a meeting of the CSU parliamentary group in the Bavarian state parliament.

Söder justified the reshuffle of his government team with an upcoming "election of fate" for the CSU.

The cabinet members would have to be "local heroes" and collect the most votes locally, said Söder in Munich.

"I am convinced that a year and a half before the election is the right time." He attested to the "very good work" of the outgoing cabinet members.

In the polls, the CSU is around 35 to 36 percent and thus still behind the poor result of the 2018 election. Söder himself had repeatedly stated that he would no longer reach the absolute majority that the CSU had always aimed for and would continue the coalition with the Free Voters is the goal.

The meeting to restructure the cabinet began with the utmost secrecy and a ban on mobile phones.

Söder (CSU) had announced that he would present the ministers and state secretaries with whom he wants to go to the state elections in autumn 2023.

There had been a lot of speculation in the past few days and weeks about the new appointments in various ministries.
