Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Wednesday February 23 the end of the emergency measures provided for in the emergency law, invoked last week to put an end to the anti-health measures demonstrations which lasted three weeks.

"We can see that we are no longer in an emergency situation. This is why the federal government is ending the emergency measures law", declared Justin Trudeau, specifying that this revocation should be effective "in hours to come".

Justin Trudeau has been strongly criticized by the opposition after he invoked this law on February 14 to end a historic challenge against public health measures.

This legislative provision granted the Canadian government exceptional powers provided for in the event of a "national crisis", allowing it in particular to authorize banks and other financial service providers to immediately freeze or suspend an account without a court order.

These exceptional powers could be maintained for a maximum period of 30 days, renewable, and they applied to all of Canada.

A costly blockage for Ottawa

Justin Trudeau's announcement comes after Ottawa was freed from protesters and truckers on Sunday following a massive police operation.

Initially minimized by the authorities, the protest movement started with truckers protesting against the obligation to be vaccinated to cross the border with the United States, then widened to a general rejection of public health rules in Canada .

The City of Ottawa estimated that the protest had cost it around 30 million Canadian dollars (20 million euros) so far, at a press conference on Wednesday.
