In the first TV debate on the 3rd of the presidential election, there is only one promise that the four candidates agreed on.

That's pension reform.

[ Ahn Cheol-soo/People's Party

Candidate

: The National Pension Reform will be done no matter who becomes president, how about a joint declaration of the four of us like this?]

I promise on the spot.]

If the current trend of low birthrate and aging population continues, it is expected that the national pension fund will run out by 2057.

It is even said that those born after 1990 pay only insurance premiums and may not receive the national pension.

[Kim Sang-ho / Jongno-gu, Seoul: Wouldn't that be a bit unfair about having only responsibility and not enjoying rights...

.]

Then, what to do, the candidates have slightly different opinions.

First, the issue of pension integration. Candidates Sang-Jeong Shim and Cheol-Soo Ahn insist on unifying the four major pensions: civil servants, private school, military, and national pension.

The idea is to set the same amount of money and payment requirements, and then think about it.

Candidate Jae-myung Lee has complicated interests and it is difficult to propose a reunification plan. Candidate Seok-yeol Yoon is of the view that if combined, the insolvency of the National Pension Service could be accelerated, so a review is necessary.

How much will you pay and how much will you receive?

Candidates Sang-Jeong Shim and Cheol-Soo Ahn are thinking of paying more and receiving more.

The goal is to reduce the burden on future generations by raising the insurance premium rate from the current 9%.

Candidates Jae-myung Lee and Seok-yeol Yoon said they would come up with a reform plan through the Pension Reform Committee.

However, for the basic pension for the elderly of 300,000 won per month, which is targeted at the bottom 70% of income, Candidate Jae-myung Lee promised to expand the coverage and Candidate Seok-yeol Yoon made a promise to raise it by 100,000 won each.

But, was this pension reform because I didn't know how to do it?

The burden of putting a bell around the cat's neck to raise the premium rate, which is a hot potato, has been repeated in each successive government.

[Park Geun-hye/Former President (May 2015): (National Pension Reorganization) is a problem that in itself places a great burden on the public.

A problem that must first seek the consent of the people...

.]

[President Moon Jae-in (August 2018): Emphasizes that the government will never unilaterally reform the national pension without the consent of the people and social consensus.]

The delayed the pension reform, the greater the burden on future generations. does not exist.

[Yang Jae-jin/Professor of Public Administration, Yonsei University: If the premium increase is delayed, you will miss all the profits, and if you do it in advance, it will be accumulated as compound interest.

.]

This means that leadership that does not avoid problems and overcomes head-on through socialization is desperately needed.
