“Today’s actions by President (Vladimir. -

) Putin represent a serious escalation and are further evidence that Russia is committed to war, not diplomacy,” the agency’s interlocutor said. 

He added that the US administration will continue consultations with its allies and partners on further steps on the situation around Ukraine.

On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees on Russia's recognition of the independence of the LNR and the DNR.

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky also stated in his video message that the recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics is a violation of Ukraine's sovereignty.
