  Cold and cold!

Guangzhou has been hit by strong cold air and rain recently. In order to resist this wave of wet and cold, many people choose to soak their feet in hot water to warm their bodies and ward off the cold. Especially middle-aged and elderly people especially like to soak their feet at night before going to bed.

The 90-year-old mother-in-law Yan, who was hospitalized in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (hereinafter referred to as the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University) due to a fracture of her lower extremity, also wanted to soak her feet, but was discouraged by the medical staff.

What's going on here?

These people should not soak their feet in hot water

It turned out that Granny Yan had deep vein thrombosis in her left lower extremity and arteriosclerosis obliterans of the lower extremity. Ye Zhengmao, deputy chief therapist of the Rehabilitation Department of the Second Guangzhou Hospital, pointed out that these two conditions are not suitable for foot bathing.

According to reports, deep vein thrombosis is a common clinical dangerous complication in fracture patients. It usually occurs after a patient's pelvic fracture or lower extremity fracture. Due to prolonged immobilization of the lower extremity, the venous blood flow is not smooth, and the blood is in a hypercoagulable state due to fracture trauma. It can easily lead to deep vein thrombosis.

If the lower limbs are soaked in warm water at this time, the blood vessels expand, and the thrombus in the veins may fall off, and the blood circulation enters the pulmonary blood vessels, thereby blocking the pulmonary arteries and forming a risk of pulmonary embolism.

People with lower extremity arteriosclerosis and occlusion are at risk of scalds and burns due to insufficient blood supply to the diseased limbs and insensitivity to temperature.

In addition, if you have lower extremity skin damage, lower extremity vascular disease, acute phase of lower extremity joint inflammation, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, heart and lung diseases and other problems, it is not suitable for feet bathing.

So how do these people stay warm?

The medical staff suggested that you can turn on the heating in the room, or wear warm cotton trousers, which is safe and warm.

Soaking feet is not the hotter the water, the longer the better

Ye Zhengmao reminded that if the taboo of foot soaking is ruled out, the scientific foot soaking operation also has the following points to pay attention to:

  1. The water temperature is appropriate. You can prepare hot water of 40°C-42°C and pour it into a bucket (the water does not cover the instep or calf).

  2. The time of soaking the feet should not be too long, 15-20 minutes is appropriate, soaking until the skin is slightly red but there is no burning sensation.

  3. After soaking your feet, in addition to drying off the water, you should check the skin for damage, blistering, or persistent redness and swelling. If there is any abnormality, it should be dealt with as soon as possible.

  4. Wear socks to keep warm after soaking your feet. At the same time, pay attention to whether there is water on the ground. Especially for the elderly, you must be careful to prevent slipping.
