• A computer failure severely disrupted the Keolis bus network in Rennes on Tuesday morning.

  • Only 30% of the buses were able to leave the depot, penalizing many passengers.

  • Deprived of a computer system, the drivers were unable to know which vehicle to borrow to carry out their service.

A morning that starts badly.

Buses that do not arrive and thousands of travelers who remain on the floor, annoyed at not seeing the Star provide its usual service.

In Rennes, a giant computer failure severely disrupted public transport on Tuesday morning.

Only 30% of the buses were able to circulate before the breakdown was restored shortly before 8:30 a.m.

Result: many passengers waited at bus stops without the possibility of obtaining information other than via Keolis' social networks.

The information system normally available at stops specifying the arrival time of the next buses was also at a standstill.

The question we ask ourselves is simple: how could a computer failure prevent thermal buses from circulating?

“Our logistics are fully computerized.

Every morning, drivers go to a terminal to obtain a service number.

This ticket tells them which bus they should take, ”explains the management of the Star.

Deprived of this system, Keolis Rennes was able to get “about 30% of the buses” out manually on Tuesday.

“We couldn't do more, it's like operating blindly”.

Set up some twenty years ago, this “SAE” for “operating assistance system” makes it possible to direct the 200 buses that circulate every day on the urban network.

Its failure is an “extremely rare” event.

Some evoke the possibility that this is “a first” since its establishment.

The reason for this outage remains to be determined.

An update that took place overnight from Monday to Tuesday could be the cause of this malfunction.

The metropolitan network, which is operated by subcontractors, was not disturbed since it does not work with the same computer system.

Line A of the metro was operating normally.
