It's business that works.

The site launched by President François Bayrou to help certain presidential candidates obtain their signatures has some 80 sponsorships from elected officials, he said on Monday.

The “Notre Démocratie” collective today brings together “several dozen” sponsorships of elected officials, “80 perhaps, something of this order”, Bayrou said on France 2.

These elected officials “declare themselves” available to sponsor those who are “threatened to be prevented” from participating in the ballot, details the collective on the Internet.

A total of 500 signatures required

The presidential candidates have until March 4 to collect the 500 signatures to have their candidacy validated by the Constitutional Council, but as the deadline approaches, some, including Marine Le Pen, Éric Zemmour and Jean-Luc Mélenchon , say they are struggling to garner the necessary sponsorships.

This is why François Bayrou announced on February 10, the creation of a site offering mayors to sponsor candidates, provided that they "reach 10% in the polls".

"We have three major candidates in this election above 10% and even, who reach 15%, which means 4 or 5 million voting intentions that do not have sponsorships", again underlined the former minister on Monday.

"These signatures are not support" for a political current or a candidate, but are "transpartisan, objective", to allow these candidates to run and "not to compromise the loyalty of the presidential election by excluding candidates, simply because they would not have signatures", he recalled.

It is in a similar spirit that the mayor LR of Cannes, David Lisnard, also president of the Association of mayors of France (AMF) announced Sunday evening to give, "for civic concern", his sponsorship to Jean-Luc Mélenchon , who is however the candidate from whom he says he is “furthest away”.
