In the aftermath of the Ethiopian celebrations, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed Cairo's anger through a press release deeming that it was a "

unilateral commissioning of the dam in deliberate violation of the declaration of principles signed in 2015 by the Ethiopian Prime Minister

 .

According to this declaration, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt were to negotiate an agreement on the filling of the dam.

Negotiations that never succeeded, Ethiopia refusing to sign a legally binding agreement demanded by Egypt and Sudan.

A series of agreements had been signed between 1902 and 1959, giving Egypt and Sudan the right to object to any project affecting the flow of the Nile.

Agreements that Ethiopia considers obsolete because of their signature at the time of colonization.

For Egypt, Ethiopia's action is a threat to the stability of the region.
