When you Google Turkey in English, you will no longer see images of shiny turkeys.

And when Americans order their Thanksgiving dinner, they no longer risk choking on a nation of 84 million people.

That is, at least, the objective of the Turkish authorities who, with the presidential adviser in Communication at the head, have undertaken all the necessary procedures so that Turkey stops being called Turkey.

That is, call it

Türkiye

.

"

Say Türkiye

" (Di Türkiye), a message with which numerous media are opening these days, and which appears on numerous tourist banners and is spread on social networks, is the second leg of a campaign that began on December 3 last.

On that day, Recep Tayyip Erdogan published a memo urging his population to stop referring to his country as

Turkey

when they speak of him in other languages.

And to use, instead, the term

Türkiye

, which is how they say it in their own language.

"Türkiye is accepted as an umbrella brand in our country and on the national and international scene,

" said the Turkish president.

"Türkiye is the best representation and expression of Turkish culture, civilization and values."

The leader, in addition, called to end the famous 'Made in Turkey' of clothing and resort to 'Made in Türkiye'.

After his call, the English accounts of the main Turkish organizations changed Turkey to Türkiye.

Since Ottoman times, most Western countries assumed an assumed Latinization of Italian, Turchia: Turkey in Spanish, Türkei in German, Turquie in French or Turkey in English, which, in the end, ended up also being used to refer to a type of wild bird that the colonizers found when they arrived in North America and that reminded them of the common guinea fowl, which they imported from the Ottoman Empire.

Although today Turkey is not popularized as a pejorative term, Turkish state media such as the TRT network argue in their articles that it is: "The vast majority of the people of Turkey feel that calling the country by its local name is the only thing that makes sense. , and is consistent with the country's goals of determining how others should identify you," adds an article on the TRT website.

Another argument presented these days by the Turkish press is to compare itself with the neighboring country.

For centuries, foreigners had spoken of Persia, a reference to the Persian empires and the historic region of Pars.

In 1935, on the recommendation of the Persian ambassador to Germany and in order to free himself from colonial influence, Shah Reza formally requested the international community that henceforth his country be called Iran.

That's what the Iranians called his country: 'Land of the Aryans'.

In a similar gesture, according to Turkish media,

Ankara has formally notified the UN of the name change

.

It has not been clarified, however, how the question of the umlaut should be resolved, included in the Turkish alphabet -latinized after the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey by Atatürk- but not in the standard Latin.

Until now, official sources have used both denominations in their publications: Türkiye and Turkiye.

At the same time that the Turkish Government invests in promoting the name change among the millions of tourists who visit their country in the post-pandemic, there are those who wonder if such waste and decisions are necessary in these times, economically difficult for the majority of Turks. .

Unal Cevikoz, an opposition deputy, adds his own doubts about changing the name to a turkey:

"We also associate this bird with India, and in fact we call it Hindi," he

told the

Middle East Monitor

.

"I think it's a waste of time."
