While Europe has its eyes riveted on Ukraine, the political situation in Bosnia is "more worrying than ever", worries the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.

The secessionist aims of the Serbian entity raise fears of a return to the dark years of inter-community conflict.

“It was never easy but now the centrifugal tendencies are really very worrying,” worried Josep Borrell in an intervention at the Munich Security Conference.

Two Serbian and Croat-Muslim entities, and a central state

In recent months, tensions have increased in this country made up of two entities – the Republic of Srpska (RS, Serbian) and a Croat-Muslim federation – united by a central state, with the multiplication of secessionist threats from the political leader of the RS, Milorad Dodik.

The head of EU diplomacy called on “the responsibility of the political leaders of Bosnia to avoid the break-up of the country”, urging them to “carry out the necessary constitutional and electoral reforms.

We will not accept the break-up and disintegration of Bosnia”, assured Josep Borrell while these worrying developments must be on the agenda of a meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday.

Milorad Dodik, the Serbian elected to the country's tripartite presidency, has multiplied separatist speeches in recent months, giving the impression of wanting to leave the central institutions of this Balkan country as soon as possible.

These statements earned him US sanctions.

On December 10, the RS Parliament gave the government of this entity of Bosnian Serbs six months to legally organize the departure of three crucial institutions common to the central state: the army, justice and taxes. .
