The analyst noted that similar statements about the possibility of acquiring a nuclear status by Kiev were heard earlier.

“I must say that in fact there are very serious political and technical obstacles to this.

All this will violate the very treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, because then, in 1994, it was unequivocally decided that Ukraine would renounce nuclear status, it would not receive it, ”Yermakov explained.

He added that NATO members, primarily the United States, oppose the acquisition of nuclear status by Ukraine.

“The United States is not interested in Ukraine getting nuclear weapons under its control, given the level of strategic and political culture that we are now seeing in the Kiev leadership: both Poroshenko and Zelensky,” the expert said.

In his opinion, by raising such issues, Ukraine can get even more problems in relations with leading European and North American countries.

Earlier, Zelensky announced his intention to initiate consultations within the framework of the Budapest Memorandum.

He noted that "if the consultations do not take place again or there are no security guarantees for our country as a result of them, Ukraine will have every right to believe that the Budapest Memorandum does not work, and all package decisions of 1994 will be called into question."
