Australian rescuers on Friday evening found the body of a young Iraqi doctor who drowned in the Mermaid area on the Gold Coast in Queensland on the east coast of Australia.

Police said Luqman Jubeir, 35, who works in cancer research at Australia's Griffith University, went into the waters in Miami last Thursday night with two other men to rescue a drowning fisherman, but was swept away by strong waves.

The fisherman was safely returned to shore, but Dr. Jubeir has not been seen since the rescue operation, and an extensive search by land, air and water failed to find him, until they found his body off Mermaid Beach on Friday.

Dr. Jubeir left Iraq in 2014, where he was a qualified doctor, and was rehabilitated in Australia, a researcher in the field of cancer at Griffith University.

A colleague from Griffith University, Dr. Nigel Macmillan, said Luqman "was a wonderful colleague, friend, and dedicated scientist, and he was working on a gene-editing technology called CRISPR, for use in the fight against cancer."
