The Abu Dhabi Department of Health has warned of 2,238 fraudulent medicinal, nutritional and sexual tonic products, and published a list of their names, sources and reasons for ban on its website, noting that they pose a health risk.

The department indicated that the list of fraudulent products includes contaminated food supplements that are used for building muscle, bodybuilding, sexual enhancement, weight reduction, cosmetics, or any other miscellaneous health-related reasons.

And she called not to buy or consume any product included in this list, and to take advice from the attending physician or health care professional before using any nutritional supplement, to discuss the potential benefits and risks, especially if the person suffers from any health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, diseases. The fraudulent products included dangerous substances and it was prohibited to use them, such as sibutramine, which is considered an appetite suppressant, and was previously used in the treatment of obesity before stopping it as a result of the side effects it causes, such as increased heart rate and high blood pressure, in addition to dry mouth, difficulty sleeping and constipation, as well as the possibility of causing in the occurrence of heart attacks and strokes.

The list also included many drugs that contain substances that are used only under medical supervision, such as sulfamethoxazole, as cheating in this substance can lead to an increase in antimicrobial resistance among the population, which makes treatment of complex bacterial infections difficult in the future, and paracetamol. Lidocaine, a local anesthetic that is used only under medical supervision, and deliberate fraud in nutritional supplements can lead to serious health risks, including low blood pressure and a slow heartbeat.

Fake medicines and products also included indomethacin, a medicine that is only available with a prescription.

Its side effects include stomach upset, headache, and blurred vision.

And sildenafil, which is used to treat impotence, and its improper use can lead to heart attacks, strokes, chest pain, and high blood pressure and heart rate.

And yohimbine, which is related to sexual tonics, can cause convulsions, and poses a great danger to patients with pressure and heart.

The department stressed that the use of these products can lead to dangerous health effects, as they are manufactured and stored in inappropriate conditions, and do not follow good manufacturing practices, which may lead to contamination of the product with harmful substances such as bacteria, fungi and heavy metals.

In addition, some of these products have been proven to be deceitful with medicinal substances whose presence in the product has not been announced.

She stressed the need to ensure the quality of the product before using it, and to make sure to buy it from approved sales outlets, warning against buying medical products, beauty products and nutritional supplements via the Internet and social networking sites, and being drawn into misleading claims and marketing phrases.
