In view of the escalation of the conflict with Russia, the Federal Foreign Office has tightened its travel warning for Ukraine.

"German citizens are urgently requested to leave the country now," the Foreign Ministry said on its website on Saturday.

"A military conflict is possible at any time," the statement said.

This is a clear tightening.

So far, the ministry had only asked those Germans to leave the country "at short notice" whose presence was not "absolutely necessary".

"Tensions between Russia and Ukraine have increased due to the massive presence and movements of Russian military units near the Ukrainian borders," it said.

"Should there be a Russian attack on Ukraine, the options for supporting German nationals are very limited," the Federal Foreign Office warned.

All Germans who are still in Ukraine have also been asked once again to put their names on the crisis prevention list of the German Foreign Ministry.

Lufthansa is suspending its flights to Ukraine from Monday to the end of February.

A Lufthansa spokesman said there would still be a few flights on Saturday and Sunday to enable people to leave Ukraine.
