The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, under the leadership of Supreme Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Putin, conducted a planned exercise of strategic deterrence forces.

During the exercise, ballistic and cruise missiles were launched.

The President of Russia watched the course of the exercise from the situational center of the Kremlin, along with Putin was also the head of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

As noted in the press service of the Kremlin, the forces and means of the Aerospace Forces, the Southern Military District, the Northern and Black Sea Fleets, and the Strategic Missile Forces were involved in the exercise.

“The Aerospace Forces successfully launched the Kinzhal hypersonic aeroballistic missiles.

Ships and submarines of the Northern and Black Sea Fleets launched Kalibr cruise missiles and Zirkon hypersonic missiles at sea and ground targets.

In the Astrakhan region, at the Kapustin Yar test site, a practical launch of the Iskander ground-based cruise missile was carried out.

From the Plesetsk cosmodrome, the Yars intercontinental ballistic missile was launched at the Kura test site on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Also, air-launched cruise missiles were fired from Tu-95MS long-range strategic missile carriers, they hit targets at the Pemboi and Kura training grounds.

“From the waters of the Barents Sea, from the strategic nuclear submarine Karelia of the Northern Fleet, a Sineva ballistic missile was launched at the Kura range,” the Kremlin added.

The report emphasizes that the exercise of the strategic deterrence forces was planned in advance.

As part of the exercise, the reliability of the weapons of strategic nuclear and non-nuclear forces, the readiness of military command and control agencies, launch combat crews, crews of warships and strategic missile carriers to perform their tasks were tested. 

“The tasks envisaged during the exercise of the strategic deterrence forces have been completed in full, all the missiles hit the designated targets, confirming the specified characteristics,” the Kremlin added.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu earlier reported to Vladimir Putin on the readiness of the forces and assets involved in the exercise of strategic nuclear forces.

“In accordance with the decision you made, today, under your leadership, an exercise of the Strategic Deterrence Forces is being held, which will work out the management of nuclear weapons and weapons of increased potential danger in a single control loop during the operation of strategic offensive forces,” Shoigu reported to Putin .

The purpose of the exercise is "to practice the actions of strategic offensive forces to inflict guaranteed defeat on the enemy," said Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the RF Armed Forces.

He noted that during the first stage of the exercise of the Russian Strategic Nuclear Forces, the issue of conducting military operations with the use of weapons of increased potential danger will be worked out, and at the second stage, the authorization and massive use of the strategic offensive forces of the Russian Federation in a retaliatory strike.
