In December, a jury found 49-year-old former police officer Kim Potter guilty of the second-degree manslaughter crime.
She accidentally drew her pistol instead of her electric shock weapon against Wright, which was fired in connection with a traffic control.
The prosecutor demanded seven years in prison, but Judge Regina Chu took into account that Potter is "extremely remorseful".
- Police Potter made a mistake that ended tragically.
She never intended to hurt anyone, Chu said with tears in her eyes.
The mother in court: "will never forgive you"
Daunte Wright had a black father and a white mother.
- I will never be able to forgive you for what you stole from us, said mother Katie Wright during the emotional proceedings in court.
A sobbing Potter addressed the family of the deceased:
- I understand a mother's love and I'm sorry I broke your heart.
The fatal shooting received a lot of attention.
A series of demonstrations followed in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
This coincided with the time that police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of the murder of George Floyd in the city.
