In December, a jury found 49-year-old former police officer Kim Potter guilty of the second-degree manslaughter crime.

She accidentally drew her pistol instead of her electric shock weapon against Wright, which was fired in connection with a traffic control.

The prosecutor demanded seven years in prison, but Judge Regina Chu took into account that Potter is "extremely remorseful".

- Police Potter made a mistake that ended tragically.

She never intended to hurt anyone, Chu said with tears in her eyes.

The mother in court: "will never forgive you"

Daunte Wright had a black father and a white mother.

- I will never be able to forgive you for what you stole from us, said mother Katie Wright during the emotional proceedings in court.

A sobbing Potter addressed the family of the deceased:

- I understand a mother's love and I'm sorry I broke your heart.

The fatal shooting received a lot of attention.

A series of demonstrations followed in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

This coincided with the time that police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of the murder of George Floyd in the city.
