Minister of Education Lina Axelsson Kihlblom sees several problems with the current queuing system for independent schools.

- The queuing system means that many do not even get a chance to choose, she says.

For example, children who come to Sweden, move to a new city or are born late in the year do not have the same chance as those who can be queued from birth, she says.

Wants the school choice to be fairer

Axelsson Kihlblom also says that the government has decided on a legal council referral with proposals aimed at increasing equality in the Swedish school.

- We introduce in the Education Act that principals should work for a comprehensive social composition for students in their schools, says the Minister of Education.

- Independent schools will no longer be able to use queue time as a selection for their schools, which means that the choice of school is expanded and becomes more fair.

On the other hand, the government wants the independent schools to be able to use other selection criteria, for example giving priority to children who have a sibling at school, live nearby or are in need of special support or have other special reasons.

If the proposal has the support of the Riksdag, the Minister of Education cannot answer.
