Switzerland has begun to unblock and transfer to Spain the more than 43 million euros deposited in various banking entities by some of those convicted of the
Gürtel plot
.
Most of the findos had been blocked since 2009, when the case broke out.
As explained this Thursday by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, the transfers involve executing the main sentence of the
Gürtel case
issued by the National Court, which was confirmed at the end of 2020 by the Supreme Court.
"After acquiring firmness the aforementioned sentence, and in order to be able to satisfy the different civil responsibilities and others of a pecuniary nature (fines and confiscations), the Chamber agreed to issue a request for international judicial assistance to the Swiss authorities," explains the Prosecutor's Office.
These were funds from the accounts of Golden Chain Properties SA and Mall Business SA at Credit Suisse, Panamanian companies whose beneficiaries were, respectively, Francisco Correa and Pablo Crespo.
In these accounts, the two main defendants in the Gürtel plot hid the illicit profits from bribes and intermediation in awards with public administrations governed by the PP between 2005 and 2009. The funds were blocked in March 2009, a month after the arrest of both .
Years later, in 2013, the funds detected in Switzerland to the former treasurer of the PP Luis Bárcenas were blocked.
In his case, he had the funds directly in his name or hidden through the also convicted Iván Yáñez.
The money was in the Zurich and Geneva branches of the entities Dresdner Bank (later LGT Bank) and Lombard Odier, in the name of a Uruguayan and a Panamanian company.
The Prosecutor's Office explains that the return of these assets "entails a complex processing process that usually lasts for years" and considers that in this case the collaboration of the Swiss authorities has facilitated the process, once the sentence has been declared final, to be fast.
The actions of the main defendants have also made things easier.
Correa and others involved in Gürtel have expressly authorized the Swiss authorities to transfer their funds to deal with court decisions.
