Britta Björkholm, head of department at the Swedish Public Health Agency, began the press conference by saying that today's most important message is that we have a high level of immunity in the population.

- Both because many have been vaccinated and many have undergone covid-19 infections.

Which has created a high level of immunity and thus led the pandemic into a new phase here in Sweden, she says.

Almost everyone who is infected with covid-19 now has the omicron variant, which gives a lower proportion of those infected with a serious illness, Björkholm states.

Despite this, the situation remains strained in healthcare.

- It is still so, due to the large spread of infection.

The peak may have been reached

On Thursday, almost 4,100 new cases were reported.

However, since the Swedish Public Health Agency has recently changed its recommendations regarding testing, it is difficult to know how many actually carry the virus based on that figure and to follow the curve of the spread of infection.

According to the Swedish Public Health Agency, however, the peak of the spread of infection may be behind us.

- Possibly we have passed the top, says Björkholm.

She also says that the vast majority of regions in the world have reported fewer corona falls now than before and that the total number of confirmed corona falls has decreased by 19 percent globally during week 6.

- However, the deaths are at about the same level as previous weeks.
