• Individuals broke into a fire ambulance while they were on the job.

  • Personal effects and emergency equipment were stolen and the vehicle was damaged.

  • One of the suspects was apprehended by the firefighters who handed him over to the gendarmes.

During the night of Monday to Tuesday, a crew of firefighters on board an ambulance intervened to provide assistance to a victim in Wavrin, near Lille, in the North.

Several individuals took the opportunity to break into the emergency vehicle in order to steal various effects and commit damage, we learned from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS) of the North.

The ambulance crew had therefore left their vehicle to go to the person who needed to be rescued.

The victim rescue and assistance vehicle (VSAV) had been left open and several individuals entered the driver's compartment.

Once in the square, they stole everything they had at hand without distinction, including personal belongings of firefighters and first aid equipment.

One of them even damaged the console used to operate the vehicle's flashing light and siren.

Filmed by a witness

According to the SDIS, a witness to the scene was even able to film the individuals while they "made selfies, before leaving without hurrying".

On leaving the victim's home, the firefighters saw the suspects leave the scene.

They were able to “contain one of them”, who was delivered to the gendarmes.

After taking the victim to the hospital, the ambulance crew returned to the scene to search for the items that had been stolen.

It was on a pile of rubble that the firefighters found most of their belongings, abandoned there by the thieves.

These had disappeared.

The firefighters and the SDIS will file a complaint.

A police investigation was opened to try to find the individuals.
