The BullSequana XH3000 machine, a parallelepiped of about 2.5 square meters and two meters high will be able to accommodate all types of processors on the market, depending on the customer's wishes, Atos said.

The basic machine, cooled by water, can be joined to others to form very powerful supercomputers used in scientific research centers or for certain industrial applications, such as meteorology or oil research.

For now, the most powerful supercomputer built by Atos ranks eighth in the world in terms of computing power, according to the ranking established by the TOP500 list.

Called Juwels, it is in service in the German computing center of Juelich, and has a power of 44.1 petaflops, or 44.1 million billion calculations per second.

The Secretary of State for Digital Cédric O, who came to attend the presentation of the new machine in Paris, underlined the strategic nature of Atos' "supercomputer" activity.

"In the global technological competition, there are certain technologies which are key in all fields" and "this is the case" of the supercomputer, he said.

In general, Atos is an "asset of French and European sovereignty", he underlined.

Atos is currently going through a bad financial and stock market situation.

The sale of the Atos division (which produces the supercomputer and also includes the group's cybersecurity activities) has been considered in certain press reports.

The hypothesis was however denied within the group.
