The

European mission

that will be sent by the European Parliament to the Balearic Islands to investigate and monitor the scandal of sexual abuse suffered by minors in care will ask the President of the Government,

Francina Armengol

, for explanations .

They will also sit down with the mothers of

two victims

: the most important testimony on the agenda set for those days.

The members of the delegation, appointed by the Petitions Commission chaired by Dolors Monserrat (PP), will visit Mallorca during the next month of

April

, specifically between the 11th and 13th of that month.

In the working documents that they have sent to the Balearic Parliament they have requested that a series of meetings be organized.

Among them, one with the leader of the Balearic Executive to report on the matter and the measures that her government has adopted.

In addition to Armengol, the European Parliament, through a letter sent by

Carolina Lecocq

, a member of the Commission, has demanded the appearance of other local political authorities.

Like the Minister of Social Affairs,

Fina Santiago (Més)

, or the president of the Consell de Mallorca,

Catalina Cladera

, a fellow member of Armengol's ranks in the PSOE and leader of the institution that has the main powers over the guardianship of minors.

Specifically, twelve people will travel to the Balearic Islands, including interpreters, secretaries and representatives of the political groups that make up the Petitions Committee, the body that, as EL MUNDO revealed, asked the Government of Spain for explanations about this serious scandal uncovered in the year 2020.

The meeting with Armengol has been set for Tuesday the 12th at 10 in the morning, as reflected in the document whose content this newspaper has had access to.

The day before, the mission will meet with the citizens who took the matter to the community authorities and with the mothers of two minors who were victims of abuse.

The scandal broke out in early 2020, after a minor under guardianship suffered a

gang rape

in Palma.

The case, which shocked public opinion, uncovered a phenomenon that had remained hidden by the institutions: the repeated cases of minors in care who suffered sexual abuse or prostituted themselves outside the care centers, being victims of adults who took advantage of their vulnerability.

In exchange for drugs, money or gifts, they were subjected to these sexual abuses.

The island government admitted at least 16 cases in recent years, stating that the phenomenon dates back to years ago and that the cases were reported to the Prosecutor's Office by the staff of the centers and social services.

It was the

Prosecutor's Office itself that investigated whether there was a plot that was also infiltrated

in the guardianship centers,

shelving

the case as it found no evidence that there was an organized plot with people in the centers but rather that they were "very serious" isolated cases, which were They investigated separately.

The European delegation has also demanded to meet with the prosecutor for minors in the Balearic Islands,

José Díaz

.

The case unleashed an intense political controversy, with harsh cross accusations.

The parties that govern the Balearic Islands, with the PSOE at the helm, rejected the creation of a parliamentary investigation commission on two occasions.

A political commission was organized that did not lead to definitive conclusions, pointing to the complexity of the phenomenon.

No one has assumed political responsibility or resigned for it.

Last summer,

the Police arrested 17 people

involved in these abuses, all of them outside the public administration.

The judicial investigation has been followed under strict secrecy.

So far there has been at least one prison sentence for an adult in the Balearic courts for sexually abusing minors under guardianship in a hotel in Magaluf, in Mallorca.
