On Monday, the defender of rights repudiated the decision taken by the town hall of Valence to deprive the families of juvenile offenders of municipal aid.

A decision that harms, according to the defender of rights, the best interests of the child.

Invited to Europe 1, Nicolas Daragon, the mayor (LR) of Valence, counter-attacked by denouncing a "staggering" decision.

INTERVIEW

On Monday, the defender of rights, Claire Hédon, sent a letter of recommendation to the mayor of Valence concerning the abolition of aid for the families of minors convicted by the courts.

The measure was decided by the municipality after urban violence that occurred at the end of 2020.

The families of the troublemakers had been deprived of culture checks and checks to practice sport.

Aid for access to transport or to pay for the canteen had also been suspended for the families concerned.

The defender of rights calls for the abolition of this measure in the name of the best interests of the child and in particular those of the brothers and sisters of the offenders in question.

Moreover, Claire Hédon believes that this measure challenges constitutional law because it is impossible to challenge this deprivation.

“Parents understand the financial threat to the wallet”

"I have no reason to pay aid when families do not agree to participate in the education of their own children", defended Nicolas Daragon, the mayor Les Républicains de Valence, invited to the microphone of Europe 1 this Wednesday.

"Parents understand the financial threat to the wallet," he added.

The city councilor also affirms that of the thirty families concerned by the measure, all have accepted the educational path proposed by the Town Hall in order to be able to benefit from the aid again.

According to the guest from Europe 1, the decision of the defender of rights is "amazing": "It's legal verbiage on seven pages to explain to us that we must continue to subsidize parents who turn away from education. of their children, even if they commit acts of delinquency. What kind of world do we live in? We no longer understand French law."

“I will not go back on this decision”

"We have already heard of this defender of rights on identity checks. I think she has political connections. What I would like to tell her is that I do not have the same opinion as her. . I will not go back on this decision", he assured the microphone of Europe 1

The mayor of Valence also recalled that families whose children commit acts of delinquency were also likely to see their right to social housing revoked.

"Since 2014, a process allows us, after two formal notices, to request a judicial termination of the lease."

The municipality would have terminated 140 since the start of the system.

"In a stairwell of 25 apartments, there is sometimes a family that prevents everyone from living peacefully. There is no reason for these people to continue to help them through a social housing", argues the mayor.
