China News Service, February 16. According to Euronet, citing EUN News Agency, the Constitutional Court of the Supreme Court of Italy, after deliberation by a collegial panel on the 15th, rejected a referendum on the decriminalization of euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Advocates of a referendum to legalize euthanasia in Italy reportedly collected 750,000 signatures in August 2021, far exceeding the minimum requirement.

Italy's top court, the Constitutional Court, said in a press release that the referendum would not guarantee minimum protections for human life in general, but especially for the weak and vulnerable.

For this reason, the Constitutional Court rejected a referendum on the decriminalization of euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Under current Italian law, anyone who helps another person to commit suicide could be jailed for five to 12 years.
