Norwegian has no direct flights to the country but normally flies over the western parts in connection with flights to Hungary and Turkey.

- In general, we do not fly very much over Ukraine.

After the MH17 accident, we have avoided the eastern parts of Ukraine, says communications director Esben Tuman to TV2.

Prioritizes evacuations

Among other things, British British Airways has made similar decisions, while Dutch KLM has decided to stop all flights to the country.

Other large airlines, such as SAS and Lufthansa, have, however, chosen to continue their flights.

According to aviation safety expert Hans Kjäll, their decision is probably justified by the fact that Ukraine is not counted as a war zone.

This means that companies can continue to evacuate people on the authorities' lists.

- The airlines follow international rules.

Even if the threat of war is great, what is going on must be defined as a war zone.

Because Ukraine does not do that, the companies can still fly over the region and prioritize the evacuation, Kjäll tells SVT.

Affects ticket prices

Ukraine's airspace is normally well-trafficked.

A deteriorating situation and a possible war therefore risk having major consequences for commercial air traffic, the aviation safety expert continues.

- This would mean that the flight routes must be redone so that you round Ukraine in different ways.

It takes time to solve and costs money.

The detours would, according to him, lead to higher fuel costs and higher ticket prices.

It would also mean increased congestion at adjacent airports and congestion.

- If more airlines decide to cancel the flights, it will mean a very difficult situation.

People do not leave the country without flights when, in principle, all border crossings are stopped.
