The first weekend of the security plan against youth gangs leaves in the region and the capital numerous apprehensions of bladed weapons, dozens of identifications, several detainees and the inspection of many armories, knife shops, hardware stores and stores likely to sell bladed weapons.

There were no serious brawls between these groups, although there was a fight between several minors allegedly related to gangs that ended with a minor injury treated by the Samur in the Usera district.

Between Thursday and Sunday, the agents of the Municipal Police, the National Police and the Civil Guard have carried out numerous controls in leisure areas and in parks to stop possible reprisals among gang members, after the two deaths and the stabbed for gang fights last weekend.

In Ciudad Lineal, Usera and in the Centro district, most of the seizures of bladed weapons and machetes by the Municipal Police took place.

Of particular importance in these interventions were the agents of the police station 3, directed by the main police station Ema Teresa, who seized several knives whose possession is prohibited for exceeding 11 centimeters of blade.

In several of the cases, the minors admitted that they had bought the machete online and one of them hid it under the platform of his electric scooter.

If you get something, let's see if you can give us flowers at the Zone 3 Police Station, led by Ema

Another of the machetes was hidden in sewers or electricity meters.

At number 25 Orcasur Avenue in Usera, a large Hunter brand machete was found in a gas meter room.

Specifically, it had 35 centimeters of blade.

One of the interventions with the most seized white weapons occurred last Friday in the Casino de la Reina de Lavapiés park in the Centro district.

There the agents of the UCES (riot control of the Municipal Police) found several machetes and other prohibited weapons.

In a store in the Alcalá Norte shopping center, the Municipal Police officers also seized a machete that two young people, 21 and 22, had just bought.

In another checkpoint next to a Ciudad Lineal location frequented by gang members, the Municipal Police also seized another machete.

One of the arrests of the National Police precisely occurred on Saturday afternoon next to the park on San Mario de Usera street where the young Diego López, 25, was stabbed to death on February 5 by the DDP.

In the street of Carabelos, the arrest of a 28-year-old boy was carried out, who assured that he was a witness to the deadly aggression of the DDP and that he had a search warrant for a crime of injuries.

He had gone to the area to support the relatives of the deceased.

The new security device against gangs was visible in several parks in Usera, Villaverde, Carabanchel and Latina.

In the Pradolongo park there were more than 30 identified and the same thing happened in the sports fields of Asunción street where 20 young people were affiliated.

Police officers also interviewed hardware store owners.

The agents told them about the current problems so that they prevent and monitor the sale of items that can be used to injure, and even kill, such as knives and machetes.

The spokesman for Jupol, the National Police union, yesterday called for more police reinforcements in nightlife areas and assured that "there has been no increase in gangs, but there has been an increase in violence due to the splits in the gangs that cause fights between them. themselves”.

The expert in urban groups, Joan Caballero, has defined the members of these gangs that now move in Madrid as

minors of the "third generation of gang members" in Spain

, since the security forces and justice had already had to placate their violence in 2003, when they emerged in the country, and in 2014, the year in which the Supreme Court declared the criminal and illicit nature of Dominican Don't Play (first and second generation).

Later, as Caballero explained to the Efe agency, society has not bothered to welcome these young people in the community, many of them of foreign origin or of immigrant parents, but with Spanish nationality -the latter represent 90%, according to the Government delegate in Madrid, Mercedes González-.

It is within the gangs that they have found the "feeling of belonging" that they lacked.

"They feel like it's their second family," she says.

In fact, such a commitment to brotherhood is what leads them to show no scruples when it comes to committing crimes when their superiors so request, reaching the extreme of going to kill in cold blood.

Likewise, Joan Caballero points out that society, in addition to marginalizing them, has "stigmatized" the members of the gangs, which has made them "reaffirm" their status as "gang members": "If the people and the TV say so Well, yes, I am."

delegitimize violence

The experts consulted agree in calling for a state plan to prevent youth violence, the absence of which has given wings to young people in situations of social vulnerability to become radicalized within gangs and other groups.

The president of the Movement Against Intolerance, Esteban Ibarra, one of the voices demanding that the government promote policies against crime among minors, stressed to Efe the need to "delegitimize violence" as well as "stop normalizing and justifying such conduct".

At the judicial level, he recalls that the declaration of the DDP and other gangs as criminal organizations by the Supreme Court means that the security forces can bring to justice any individual who is investigated and has sufficient links with said organizations, but "they cannot is being done," denounces Ibarra.

In addition, it maintains that the minor's law, which punishes serious crimes committed by people over 16 years of age with internment, "trivializes" the sanctions for young people in that age range who commit crimes within the gangs.

Ibarra points out that the discourse against violence must be separated from xenophobia, since it has nothing to do with the origin of "criminals."
