Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin talked on Saturday night about Ukraine and Russia's squad structure.

The conversation lasted for just over an hour.

According to the White House, Biden told Putin that if Russia invades Ukraine, the United States and its allies will quickly impose heavy sanctions on Russia.

Biden is also said to have called on Russia to step down and diplomacy, saying that a Russian invasion of Ukraine would mean "extensive human suffering".

Vita also announces that Biden said that although the diplomatic channels are still open, the United States is "equally prepared for alternative scenarios".

The meeting was held just hours after the announcement that an evacuation of the US embassy in Kiev has begun.

According to the Kremlin, during the talks, Putin once again rejected US warnings that an invasion was imminent.

Putin in several phone calls

Earlier on Saturday, French President Emanuel Macron had a more than 90-minute phone call with Putin.

According to one of Macron's officials, Putin said nothing as he indicated that Russia was preparing to invade Ukraine.

"However, we are extremely vigilant," the official told reporters after the conversation, writes Reuters.

The Kremlin says that during the conversation with Macron, Putin called the information about an impending attack on Ukraine "speculation with the aim of provoking".

Putin also had a conversation on Saturday with Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko, and Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke by telephone with his US counterpart Anthony Blinken.

According to Reuters, Lavrov has accused the US and the EU of ignoring Russia's proposals for security in Europe.

He also accuses the United States of a propaganda campaign about "possible Russian aggression".
