The Government of the Canadian province of Ontario declared a state of emergency this Friday due to the protests of truckers opposed to the measures against covid-19 and blocking the main route for merchandise traffic between Canada and the United States.

Ontario Premier

Doug Ford

announced the move at a news conference, noting that authorities will impose fines of about US$79,000 and

sentences of up to one year in prison

for those who block or impede vehicle traffic.

The announcement comes on the fifth day of the blockade of the main land crossing between the US and Canada, the Ambassador Bridge, which connects the Canadian town of Windsor with the US town of Detroit and through which goods worth 400 million dollars pass daily. dollars or the equivalent of 25% of the goods exported between the two countries.

"We will take whatever steps are necessary to ensure the reopening of the border. And to besieged Ottawa, I say:

We will make sure you can get back to normal life as soon as possible

," said Doug Ford.

Downtown Ottawa has been paralyzed for two weeks by protesters calling for all anti-Covid sanitary measures to be withdrawn, and refusing to leave.

"We will do whatever it takes to end these occupations," Ford added, before asking protesters: "Come home, now."

"We will urgently promulgate ordinances that will make it illegal to block roads and the movement of goods, people and services in essential infrastructure," he warned.

Ontario's Conservative premier has come under fire in recent days for his inaction on protesters, which many have blamed on electoral calculation, as he is up for re-election next June.
