The Chinese reaction comes after the publication on Tuesday of a series of figures which call into question the commitment made by the Asian giant more than two years ago, before the start of the pandemic.

After imposing mutual customs duties on hundreds of billions of dollars in annual trade, the two countries signed a truce in January 2020 in the trade war launched by former President Donald Trump.

They had agreed on "phase 1" of a trade agreement.

China had notably pledged to buy an additional $200 billion of American products over two years in order to reduce the trade imbalance between the two countries.

But figures released by the US administration show that the US trade deficit with China was still $34.1 billion in December 2021.

According to a report by the American firm Peterson Institute for International Economics published the same day, China has only bought about 57% of the American goods and services that it had committed to buy.

The study accuses Beijing of having "never been able to meet its purchasing commitments".

Charges dismissed Thursday by the Chinese government.

"Since the agreement came into effect, China has worked hard to overcome the multiple repercussions of the pandemic, the global economic slowdown and the disruptions in supply chains," spokesperson Gao Feng told reporters. of the Ministry of Commerce.

China hopes that the United States will “cancel its repressive measures of additional tariffs and sanctions as soon as possible” in order to “create a favorable atmosphere” for trade, Gao said.

Sino-American relations have deteriorated markedly under Donald Trump's tenure.

It demanded that China reduce the trade imbalance and cease its trade practices deemed "unfair" such as the "forced" transfer of technology or its subsidies to state-owned enterprises.

Joe Biden recently indicated that the United States had no intention of suspending customs duties on Chinese products for the time being.
