The two "busiest" sections of Recoletos and Cid streets will be pedestrianized.

The mayor of the city, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, inaugurates this Thursday the new pedestrian area in Madrid, "the first zero emissions zone in the Salamanca district".

From this Thursday it will be restricted to cars.

Prioritizing pedestrian traffic,

the passage of 1,138 vehicles per day will be eliminated due to the subtraction of 218 meters of roadway from road traffic.

Drivers will be sanctioned from February 16 and the street will change its appearance in the coming years.

Pedestrians, however, will gain more than two square kilometers of car-free surface.

The City Council indicates that the limitation

"will not affect public transport or the cycling network"

.

As GRAN MADRID anticipated, one of the keys to the new mobility in the city will be, between now and 2030, promoting the use of the EMT, with the expansion of the bus lane, and the renewal of the BiciMad fleet, incorporating 10,000 bicycles .

The pedestrianization covers Recoletos street, between Paseo de Recoletos and Villalar street, and Cid street, between Recoletos and Gil de Santivañes.

"The new configuration means that vehicles coming from Calle Almirante or from Paseo del Prado towards Serrano

will have to do so through Calle de la Armada Española

."

And to access Villanueva street from Almirante or Paseo del Prado,

"vehicles will have to go down from Serrano by Gil de Santivañes."

14.6 million vehicles less

In Almeida's team they believe that

"the new pedestrian zones will contribute to achieving a closer, more accessible and healthier city"

that links with the Madrid 360 Sustainable Mobility Plan that aims to "fewer accidents, less emissions, less traffic and a higher quality of air".

The objective is to "convert" Madrid into the "first large sustainable and intelligent European capital that complies with the European directive on air quality."

The next zero emission zone will be in Vicálvaro.

217 meters of Calle Condesa Vega del Pozo, between Calle de los Galeote and Lago de Sanabria,

will be pedestrianized

.

"This is a road located in the historic center of Vicálvaro, which will eliminate the traffic of 940 vehicles a day."

There are already 15 Zero Emissions Zones executed in Madrid.

The affected neighborhoods are Centro, Arganzuela, Retiro, Chamartín, Tetuán, Chamberí, Fuencarral-El Pardo, Latina, Carabanchel, Puente de Vallecas, Moratalaz, Ciudad Lineal, Hortaleza and Villaverde.

The pedestrianization map will be complete when reaching 21 zones.

When the execution of this plan included in the Madrid 360 Environmental Sustainability Strategy is completed,

14.6 million vehicles per year will have been eliminated.

Or what is the same: 40,000 vehicles a day.

The pedestrianizations are aligned "with one of the measures of the Agreements of the Villa".

The "priority" of the Environment and Mobility Area is to "design a network of safe, comfortable

and barrier-free pedestrian itineraries as one of the fundamental axes to promote micromobility

", the mode of transport on board light vehicles such as scooters or bikes, "and reduce polluting emissions in the capital."

In fact, these plans will help eliminate 65% of CO2 emissions compared to 1990, one of the goals set for the city within eight years.
