Visiting Belfort on Thursday, Emmanuel Macron presented his plan for the future of energy in France, which is based on two pillars: renewable energies and nuclear power.

takes stock of these announcements.

  • “Extend all the reactors that can be extended” beyond 50 years

The life expectancy of nuclear reactors does not suit the French president.

Emmanuel Macron wants to "extend all the reactors that can be extended", beyond 50 years if possible.

This announcement represents an about-face from its 2018 objectives, when it was planning to close a dozen.

“I made two strong decisions: to extend all the nuclear reactors that can be extended, without giving up anything on safety” and “that no nuclear reactor in a state of production be closed in the future (…) except for a reason safety", he said in Belfort, specifying that he had asked EDF "to study the conditions for extending beyond 50 years".

  • Build new reactors

Beyond the extension of existing reactors, Emmanuel Macron wants to build six new EPR nuclear reactors by 2050.

The putative candidate for the next presidential election is also considering eight other additional constructions.

It, he announced Thursday in Belfort, with the commissioning of the first EPR2 around 2035.

They will be supplemented by small modular reactors (SMR) and "innovative" reactors producing less waste, with the objective of "25 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity by 2050", a "revolution" justified by the increase in needs of electricity.

  • 50 offshore wind farms by 2050

The other axis of its announcements relates to renewable energies.

Emmanuel Macron wants to provide France with around fifty offshore wind farms to "aim for 40 gigawatts in service by 2050", a very ambitious threshold, and to double the capacity of onshore wind power, a slower increase than expected. .

In order to double the production from renewable electric energies by 2030, the Head of State also called on Belfort (Territoires-de-Belfort) to multiply "by nearly 10 the installed power" of solar energy " to exceed 100 gigawatts.
