Spy scandal causes a “crazy” jump in “stupid” phone demand

The demand in Israel for regular (non-smart) phones increased by 200%, last week, according to the Israeli importer of Nokia products.

The jump in sales of "non-smart" phones is believed to have been driven by Israelis' concern about advanced spyware such as Pegasus, after reports that police spied on civilians, according to The Times of Israel.

Devices that do not use smartphones have a limited Internet connection and therefore do not allow browsing social networking sites or messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, and others, which makes it more difficult to hack.

According to the data provided by the Walla news website, over the past three days, more than 4,000 simple Nokia phones have been purchased.

Usually between 1,000 and 2,000 units are sold in a typical week.

Leav Ron, director of the Nokia brand, told Walla that "there has been a significant increase in sales of old-generation phones... describing this increase as "crazy".

For its part, the newspaper "Times of Israel" published a tweet by Finance Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, and said that he flaunts his "stupid" phone on Twitter.

"For years, everyone has asked how I can manage without a smartphone and now everyone knows I'm doing great!" Avigdor tweeted.

כבר שנים שכולם שואלים איך אני מסתדר בלי סמארטפון - היום כולם מבינים שאני מסתדר מצוין!
