Yesterday, Wednesday, Palestinian factions called for the formation of what they described as a new transitional national council, paving the way for holding comprehensive Palestinian elections, expressing their rejection of the outcomes of the meetings of the Central Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

This came in a joint statement of the Islamic Resistance Movements (Hamas), Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, in response to the meeting of the Palestinian Central Council in the city of Ramallah in the West Bank.

The Palestinian Central Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization held its 31st session in Ramallah on Sunday and Monday.

During its meetings, the council completed vacant seats in the organization's executive committee, and elected a president and two deputies to the National Council, and a secretary.

The Central Council is a permanent body emanating from the National Council (the highest legislative body) of the PLO, and is vested with the powers of the Council.

In its statement, the factions called for the immediate start of a serious national dialogue at the level of secretaries-general (of all factions) to agree on the formation of a new transitional national council that includes everyone, and paves the way for holding comprehensive elections, which contributes quickly to reforming the Palestine Liberation Organization and activating its institutions.

The factions added that "there is neither recognition nor legitimacy for all the appointments announced by the Central Council in its meeting, both at the level of the National Council Speaker and his deputies, and the rest of the other positions," considering the meeting illegitimate.

And she continued, "We call on everyone not to deal with these appointments because they do not represent our people, and they constitute a violation of the decisions of the national consensus, and a suppression of the Palestinian popular will."

On Monday, the Palestinian News Agency said that Hussein Al-Sheikh, a member of the Central Committee of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah), succeeded the late Saeb Erekat in the membership of the Executive Committee.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Palestine Investment Fund (the sovereign fund), Muhammad Mustafa, replaced Hanan Ashrawi, who submitted her resignation last December.

Rawhi Fattouh, a member of the Central Committee of the "Fatah" movement, was elected as the head of the National Council.
