One hundred and forty-six Guinean migrants from Niger were able to return to their country on Thursday February 10 thanks to a flight chartered by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

In all, in this month of February, IOM is organizing three special flights.

For migrants who have tried to go to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea, this return is done on a voluntary basis.

Freshly returned to Guinea, these 146 people have the opportunity to be vaccinated against Covid.

In this group are mainly young people, very few women, who were “

on the road

” in the hope of reaching European shores.

A long trip and in precarious conditions.

New fact: these migrants are better educated than before.

As Lucas Chandellier, communications officer for the IOM in Guinea, observes:

The last flights, there are many young people who have studied, with a certain level of education.

Despite their academic background, they have not studied all the training paths to be able to continue their studies in Guinea or in the sub-region.

We often leave on a whim.

Among young people, it is often by mimicry, by a slightly biased idea of success in the West.

A few days after their return, these migrants are interviewed by an IOM agent, who helps them reintegrate into society.

Several options are available to them: going back to school, following a vocational training course or setting up a small business.

Projects supported by IOM.

A next repatriation flight of Guineans from Niger is scheduled for February 17.

Last year, the International Organization for Migration organized the repatriation of 4,000 Guinean migrants.
