The Federal Green Party leader Ricarda Lang understands the ongoing series of street blockades by climate activists - as long as the actions remain peaceful.

"It is clear that no one should be endangered," Lang told the Berlin "Tagesspiegel".

"I consider civil disobedience to be a legitimate means of political protest if it happens peacefully."

The 28-year-old politician continued: "However, we should ask ourselves why young people resort to such means." There is great concern for the future behind this.

“And the best answer to that is that we take political responsibility.

So do everything to finally get on the 1.5 degree path when it comes to climate protection.”

Activists who call themselves "Last Generation" have recently blocked roads and motorways on several occasions - mainly in the capital Berlin, but also in other cities such as Hamburg and Stuttgart.

They are calling for a law against food waste and an immediate change in agriculture to reduce greenhouse gases from agriculture.

According to the Federal Environment Agency, agriculture accounts for 8.2 percent of total emissions in Germany.

Compared to 1990, emissions in this area fell by around 21 percent by 2020. Total greenhouse gas emissions in Germany fell by as much as 41.3 percent within these 30 years.
