The University of California (United States) has agreed to pay nearly 244 million dollars (213 million euros) in compensation to some 200 women who accuse of sexual assault a former gynecologist, James Heaps, employed by the network university.
This amicable agreement, unveiled on Tuesday, relates to civil complaints from patients concerning facts which date back for some to 1983.
The complainants accused the university, which employed the gynecologist, specializing in oncology, of having covered up his actions and of not having taken any action against him, despite reports.
"The behavior attributed to Heaps is reprehensible and contrary to the values of the university," the latter said in a statement, saying "admire the courage of the complainants who have come forward".
The University of California will pay $243M to over 200 women who say they were sexually abused by an ex-UCLA gynecologist.
Victims say it hid allegations against James Heaps — reportedly the UC's highest paid physician — and gave him access to patients during the investigation.

An action initiated by more than 5,000 patients
The agreement announced Tuesday is in addition to a class action initiated by more than 5,000 patients, which resulted in compensation of 73 million dollars (64 million euros).
About 300 additional women have filed civil complaints against James Heaps, who is also facing criminal charges for assaults on seven women.
Last month, the University of Michigan announced that it would pay nearly 490 million dollars (428 million euros) to more than 1,000 former students and athletes sexually assaulted by a doctor at this establishment, Richard Anderson.
In another case, the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, had agreed to pay a total of 1.1 billion dollars (960 million euros) via three separate agreements to hundreds of women victims of a ex-gynecologist employed on campus, the largest amount of this type of compensation recorded to date.
