With 12 nominations, The Power of the Dog is this year's Oscar favorite.

The drama has been nominated for best film, among other things, as the Oscar Academy announced this Tuesday in Los Angeles.

New Zealand director Jane Campion and Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons, who play two brothers who run a ranch together in Montana in the 1920s, also received nominations.

The science fiction epic Dune by Canadian director Denis Villeneuve received ten nominations.

Movies like "West Side Story" and "Belfast" also have multiple chances of winning.

Among the nominations for "Dune" is one in the film score category.

Composer Hans Zimmer could win his second Oscar.

In 1995 he received an award for the soundtrack for the animated film The Lion King.

The current nomination is the twelfth in his long Hollywood career.

In January he had already won a Golden Globe for the film music for "Dune".

In addition to Zimmer, the five Oscar nominees include colleagues such as Jonny Greenwood ("The Power of the Dog") and Alberto Iglesias ("Parallel Mothers").

However, the German tragic comedy “I am your human” did not make it into the Oscar finals.

Maria Schrader's futuristic film about a scientist (Maren Eggert) who is supposed to test a humanoid robot (Dan Stevens) as a partner was initially one of fifteen candidates in the "International Feature Film" category after a preselection in December.

The five finalists announced this Tuesday by the Oscar Academy include Drive My Car (Japan), The Hand of God (Italy) and Compartment No 6 (Finland).

The 94th Academy Awards are scheduled to take place in Hollywood on March 27th.

The last German film nominated for the so-called foreign Oscar was “Werk ohne Autor” by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck in 2019.

The award went to the Mexican drama "Roma".

Donnersmarck last brought the Oscar to Germany in 2007 with his directorial debut “The Lives of Others”.
